Coroner Service

Her Majesty’s Coroner holds office under the Crown and is an independent judicial officer.  Worcestershire County Council kindly agreed to host these information pages until the Coroner’s Service website is completed, when further more detailed information and assistance will be available.

The role of the Coroner is to investigate and record the causes and circumstances of all sudden deaths where the cause is not known, violent or unnatural deaths and any death which occurred whilst the deceased was in lawful custody.  

The Coroner's Service for Worcestershire endeavours to provide a caring, efficient service making the processes involved as easily comprehensible and accessible as possible.

The Coroner for Worcestershire is Mr Geraint Williams.

If you have a cause for concern regarding a death then you are entitled to raise these concerns with the Coroner. Please contact the Coroner’s Officers at either of the District Offices to report those concerns.

Current Inquest cases:- For information on current Inquests please view the Current Inquests and Scheduled Inquests  pages. Please do not contact the Coroners Court Office, District Offices or Police Press Office, as all publicly available information is to be found on these pages.

Genealogy /past cases:- Files relating to past cases are held at the Worcester County Archive, at County Hall, Spetchley Road, Worcester.  If you are researching past cases please apply to the Coroner in writing for release of the information. The Archivist will NOT release any information without written authorisation from the Coroner.


The information given on these pages relates only to the Coroner’s Service for Worcestershire.

The Coroner

The Coroner for Worcestershire is Mr Geraint Williams.

The Coroner for Worcestershire's jurisdiction covers the administrative county of Worcestershire.

The Deputy Coroner or Assistant Deputy Coroner acts when the Coroner is not available. In so doing she/he exercises the full powers of the Coroner.

The Deputy Coroner is Mrs M Barnard.  She can be contacted via the Coroner's Court Office.

The Assistant Deputy Coroners are Mr V F Round and Mr H Medlicott. They can be contacted via the Coroner's Court Office.

How to contact the Coroner's Service

The Coroner's Court Office is situated at The Court House, Bewdley Road, Stourport on Severn. DY13 8XE. The office is open 10.00-12.30 and 1.00-4.00 Monday to Friday. Tel: 01299824029

Out of Hours:  Contact with the Coroner can be made through your local police station, a police officer will contact the Coroner on your behalf. West Mercia Police have a central non-emergency contact centre - telephone 08457 444888 and ask them to contact the appropriate Coroner’s Officer.  He/she will then contact you the following day. If you know the Coroner's Officer in the matter ask for a message to be passed to that officer.   

Coroner's Officers

In the event of a sudden death, whatever the time of day, the Police will attend on behalf of the Coroner. Once the immediate requirements have been met the officer will pass on the details of the deceased and the circumstances to a full time Coroner’s Officer.

The fulltime Coroner's Officers are provided by West Mercia Constabulary and are based at District Offices in:

Inquests

For information on current Inquests please view the Current Inquests and Scheduled Inquests  pages. Please do not contact the Coroners Office, Officers or Police Press Office.

NO other information will be released prior to the Hearing.

Feedback and complaints

The Coroner will not normally enter into correspondence about the cases with which he is or has been involved, but comments and suggestions on improving the Coroner Service are always welcome.

Complaints about a Coroner's decision or the outcome of an Inquest can only be dealt with through the High Court. The Coroner's Office will be able to explain the procedure on request, but cannot give legal advice.

All complaints about the administration of the Worcestershire Coroner Service, or the conduct of individual Coroners or their Officers should be raised in the first instance with the Coroner by writing to him.
