Disability: The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) defines a disabled person as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse
effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. [www.direct.gov.uk] |
The most recent information we have on the extent of Worcestershire’s’ population with a disability, or limiting long-term illness is from the 2001 Census which shows that in 2001, 16.7% of the county’s population declared themselves as having some form of disability.
Great Britain's 2008 Paralympics Team came back from the Beijing games in 2nd place in the medal table representing the best finish in the team's history with 102 medals, just behind China with 211.
The Disability Equality Duty
Under the 2005 Disability Discrimination Act the Council has a new duty to achieve equal opportunities for disabled people. As part of this duty we needed to produce a Disability Equality Scheme by December, 2006.
We worked with local disabled people in putting the Scheme together. Together we identified things which the Council needs to do to give disabled people to have equal opportunity as everyone else in Worcestershire. You can read the scheme by accessing the links below
