Suggestions for improving communication

Good light is essential - onto the face of the speakers - never at their back.

  • When speaking face the hearing impaired person, keep your head still and don’t look away while speaking. Keep pens, fingers and excessive facial hair away from lips.
  • Start sentences by stating the subject you are going to talk about.
  • Speak clearly and slowly (but not slow, as this distorts the rhythm of speech). Don’t shout as this distorts the face. Use hand gestures and body language to help in understanding a conversation.
  • Keep relaxed and patient. If all else fails, write things down.
  • The extra concentration needed during lip-reading is very tiring. Taking a short break with your eyes closed might help.
  • Don’t be afraid to tell people how severe your hearing loss is - people won’t know as it’s a hidden disability. Tell others what they need to do to aid communication with you.
