Kitchen Waste Disposal Units - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is a Food Waste Disposer installed?

A. Food Waste Disposers may require professional fitting. They are installed underneath your kitchen sink and connect directly to the drainage system.

Q. Do you need an electricity supply for a Food Waste Disposer?

A. Yes, it requires an electricity supply. In many kitchens a supply will be available to a washing machine or dishwasher close to the kitchen sink.

Q. How does the Food Waste Disposer work?

A. Waste Disposers shred or grind unwanted food items into tiny particles.  The particles are then safely carried away through the normal waste water system.

Q. What can I put down the sink into my Waste Disposer?

A. This depends on the type of unit that you buy. Generally, the more powerful the unit, the more you can put down it. Examples of what you can put down a typical waste disposal unit include vegetable peelings, food leftovers, tea bags, egg shells, small bones, fruit skins and crusts.  More powerful units will shred items as large as a chicken carcass.

Q. Can I claim cashback for buying and installing a Food Waste Disposer?

A. Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council are offering anyone in the two counties the opportunity to claim up to £80 back towards the cost of the purchase and installation of a Food Waste Disposer.  Terms and conditions apply.

Terms and conditions: Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council do not supply food waste disposers and give no warranty as to the availability, suitability or quality of Food Waste Disposers from any particular supplier or at all.
