Carbon dioxide (CO2), a major climate change causing gas, is a by-product of energy consumption. The workplace is a major consumer of energy. Using energy more efficiently at work can help reduce emissions of climate change gases.
A key first step in identifying measures to save energy is to monitor its' use- if you can't measure it, you can't manage it. Take regular (weekly or monthly) meter readings and keep a record. Assign responsibility for this to a particular member of staff.
Submit real readings to your supplier instead of paying against estimates- this may well save you money too.
You can also work out your base load by taking readings when there's nobody around (e.g first thing in the morning or in the evening after everyone has left). This helps you establish whether energy is being wasted when you think everything is switched off, for example because appliances have been left on unneccessarily, using energy and costing money.

Compare energy use before and after a staff awareness campaign or installing more energy efficient equipment, to see what impact the action has made.
Feedback information on energy use to staff, for example through team meetings or putting up a chart on the staff noticeboard. Include details of what this means financially (costs or savings) and environmentally (tonnes of CO2 saved or emitted). Ask staff for ideas on how to save energy or where think it is being wasted.
