At a Global level the UN has dedicated the years 2005 – 2014 the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development.
In the UK Government’s Sustainability Strategy Securing the Future, formal education is seen as having a crucial role to play. The government would like every school to be a sustainable school, ‘integrating high standards of achievement and behaviour with the goals of healthy living, environmental awareness, community involvement and citizenship, many of the same aspirations as Every Child Matters’.

The DfES has launched the National Framework for Sustainable Schools with eight doorways to help schools focus on sustainable development. Doorways offer opportunities for improvement across the school’s curriculum and campus, and in its relationship with the community. |
In Worcestershire, our strategy for ESD is part of the County Council’s Sustainability Policy and Action Plan. It is informed by the Council’s Carbon Management Plan and the Worcestershire Partnership’s Climate Change Strategy and Biodiversity Action Plan. ESD projects and support are an integral part of the Council’s Children’s Services Development Plan.
Who we work with:
The Council has an ESD Team dedicated to working primarily with schools, given their place at the heart of communities and their key role in informing the attitudes and choices of future generations. The team works closely with others within the County Council working with wider audiences, such as householders, businesses, organisations, community, pre-school and youth groups- click here to find out more.
