Income and Wages

There are two main types of data related this type of issue: Income and Earnings. It is important to recognise the differences between the information. Income data is based upon people’s area of residence, whereas earnings are collated based upon where people work. There can be significant differences between the results for income and earnings. The effect of people’s patterns of commuting to work is one major contributing factor to these differences. Therefore, considerable care is needed when interpreting the results.

Information about earnings at a local level is limited. Two main sources are used here:

  • PayCheck Data 2007, which provides estimates of gross household income down to postcode level for residents of the county.
  • The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2007 which has replaced the New Earnings Survey and is published annually by the Office for National Statistics.

PayCheck profiles income for all of the 1.7 million individual postcodes throughout the Great Britain, using information on over 6.1 million households from CACI’s lifestyle database, in conjunction with the Census and market research data, to increase the statistical reliability.
