Food Alerts are the Food Standards Agencies way of letting Local Authorities and consumers know about problems associated with food and in some cases provide details of specific action to be taken. Until October 2004 they had been known as food hazard warnings and were issued in four categories. The new system which took effect from October 2004 issues them under two categories: Food Alerts for Action and Food Alerts for information.
Food Alerts are also copied to consultants in communicable disease control, Trading Standard Officers and Food Trade Organisations to alert them to current food issues.
They are often issued in conjunction with a product withdrawal or recall by a manufacturer, retailer or distributor.
