District Centres

There are three principal towns in the Malvern Hills District - Malvern (the largest of the trio), Tenbury Wells and Upton-upon-Severn.

Malvern

Malvern is made up of a number of smaller centres including Malvern Link, West Malvern, Barnards Green, Malvern Wells and Great Malvern. The administrative and traditional heart of Malvern is Great Malvern, which provides a variety of hotels, shops and hospitality outlets catering for visitors from near and far. Malvern owes much to its past. Elgar drew much of his inspiration from the hills that dominate the landscape. Local research and development resulted in the discovery of radar which tipped the balance of World War Two decidedly in favour of the Allies. The town has many enviable education establishments, including the independent schools Malvern College and Malvern St James but also some fine secondary schools (in the Chase and Dyson Perrins). The Malvern Theatres complex attracts residents and visitors to attend top productions - many prior or following their West end run. The 'Three Counties Showground' which hosts a number of events such as The Malvern Spring Garden Show, Three Counties Show and Malvern Autumn Show is also located on the outskirts of the town.

• The Town’s Population is 30,035

• Main Employment Sites are Enigma Business Park, Malvern Hills Science Park, Malvern Science and Technology Park (QinetiQ Site), Link Industrial Estate and Blackmore Business Park

• Main Employers are QinetiQ, Dytecna Ltd, Automated Packaging, Malvern Instruments, Clarke Roxburgh and Morgan Motor Company

Upton

Upton-upon-Severn was originally a prosperous inland river port as is evidenced by the wealth of fine Georgian properties in the town. Today Upton is a successful thriving town with a host of excellent festivals and events appealing to visitors. The Town also has a substantial marina as the Severn is now a river of leisure craft and is easily accessible from both the M5 and M50 motorways.

• The town’s population is 4,119

• Main employment sites are Upton-upon-Severn Industrial Estate and nearby Buckman Works in Longdon

• Main employers are Permador and Midland Communications

Tenbury Wells

Tenbury Wells is situated on the River Teme, where the three counties of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire meet. Tenbury is a rural town that is steeped in agricultural tradition. Once the Teme Valley was clothed in hop yards and fruit orchards - but their profusion has lessened, consequently the area has had to re-invent itself and now appeals to tourists, especially day visitors from the West Midlands conurbation.

• The Town’s population is 3,794

• Main employment sites are Tenbury Business Park and Upper Teme Business Park in adjacent Burford

• Main Employers are Kerry Ingredients, Frank P Matthews, HP Mouldings and Elgar Foods
