The areas known as Spring Lane Industrial Estate and Enigma Business Park make a huge contribution to the local and national economy, employing well in excess of 1,000 people and generating a sales turnover of around £50 million. A group of managing directors of some of the key companies on these sites formed a steering group as a result of concerns about the image, profile and environment of the two sites.
One of the instrumental factors was the decline of the Spring Lane area, a 1960's industrial estate with a rising number of vacant units in contrast to the new, high quality units on Enigma Business Park. The steering group developed a vision and strategy for the area working in partnership with the District Council, The Highways Partnership, Chamber of Commerce and Madresfield Estate and officially launched The Enigma Business Park Partnership in April 1998.
Over 40 companies have signed up to the partnership and have worked together to implement a number of actions. The whole area has been renamed Enigma Business Park with new signage erected to highlight this and direct clients and suppliers into the area. Childcare facilities have been examined and a childcare pack has been produced with recommendations of two local nurseries, Education Business Partnership with local schools have been working to improve the image of manufacturing and engineering as a career, arterial roads and footpaths have been resurfaced and a newsletter produced.
The park co-ordinator, Tony Lyons, is funded by the businesses themselves, with a contribution from the District Council to encourage more businesses to join up and develop initiatives like joint procurement and more environmental improvements.
