Emergency Planning

General Emergencies
These cover everything apart from Flooding (see below):-

Police & Rescue Services are generally responsible for managing any emergency itself. The Council's responsibility is to co-operate with them and in particular to provide necessary support and aftercare for people affected. The major activity is in providing a roof over people's heads and temporary food arrangements. This is generally provided through Rest Centres.

In the event of an emergency being agreed, an Emergency Management Team will be called and all communications with the public about the emergency will be provided in the form of a regular updated brief to Customer Services.

Where the scale of the emergency requires it, an emergency help line will be set up at Worcestershire County Council to help handle the volume of calls.

General information about emergency planning across Worcestershire can be found at  www.worcestershire.gov.uk/ emergencyplanning.

Flooding
Because flooding has become a fairly regular occurrence, the Council has detailed plans to help residents protect themselves and their possessions by issuing sandbags.

We receive regular flood warning information from the Environment Agency and also from the Severn Area Rescue Association so that we have a good picture of how floods may develop. (See also Flood Advice)

A stock of sandbags is held at the depot in Malvern and, when we have warning of particular flooding, deliveries will be made to agreed sites around the district. These sites are:-

  • Tenbury Wells
  • Astley Burf
  • Kempsey
  • Upton

These stocks are there for the public to use in preventing flood damage and will be topped up as necessary.

In addition, rest centres and other forms of assistance may be organised by the Emergency Management Team as necessary.
