Standing for election and the nomination process

To stand for election you must be able to meet a few basic requirements. You must be 18 years of age or over on the day of nomination, live in or have work connections with the area and be a British or Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Irish Republic or a citizen of the European Union.  You must also be a registered voter in the district, or have lived, worked or owned a property in Malvern Hills district for at least 12 months immediately preceding nomination and election.  It is not necessary for you to live in the ward that you wish to seek election for.

You cannot stand for election if you already work for the council, are subject to a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order or have a criminal conviction involving a prison sentence of not less than 3 months in the previous 5 years or otherwise specifically disqualified.

You do not need any previous experience to become a Councillor just a genuine commitment to help your local community.

If you are thinking of standing as a candidate for a particular political party, you will need to be a member of that party's local organisation.  More information on the political parties can be found on their national websites or in the telephone directory.  Independent Councillors can find further information from the Local Government Association.

The Nomination Process

Nomination is the formal process of putting yourself forward for election. Nomination papers are available from the elections office at the council or through the appropriate political party offices.  The nomination process is demonstrated below:

  • Start of nomination period (duration around two weeks)
  • End of nomination period.  The Statement of Persons Nominated is produced
  • After three days (during which candidates may withdraw) any uncontested results are published.  Contested candidates receive a Notice of Poll shortly after this time.
  • Postal votes are dispatched one week before polling day and usually opened prior to the day of election.

Polling Day

  • A Polling day will last from 7am - 10pm
  • After polling closes on Election Day votes are counted at The Bank House Hotel, Bransford and the results are announced.  You are welcome to attend the count.
