A Guide to being a Malvern Hills District Councillor
Ever thought of standing as a district Councillor or a
Parish/Town Councillor? You may have already decided to stand
for election as a Malvern Hills District Councillor or Parish/Town
Councillor, or you may be giving it some thought and wondering what
would be involved. Either way, the following information is
provided to help you decide whether you would like to stand for
election.
Two leaflets have also been designed to help you with your
decision. If required, copies are available from the
Customer Service Centres in Malvern, Upton upon Severn and Tenbury
Wells.
Anyone can become a Councillor provided you are 18 years of age
or over on the day of nomination, have property in, live in or have
work connections with the area, are a registered voter in the area
and are a British or Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Irish
Republic or a citizen of the European Union. It is not
necessary for you to live in the ward that you wish to seek
election for.
The Council is made up of 38 Councillors representing 22 wards.
Each ward has between one and three Councillors representing
it. The number of wards and Councillors was decided by the
Local Government Commission for England.
Councillors serve a four year term after which you can stand for
re-election.
There will be an induction programme for all Councillors after
the elections. As well as this initial training, the Council
will continue to support all Councillors' needs during their term
of office.
If you are still interested in becoming a district Councillor,
you may stand as a member of a political party or as an independent
Councillor.
